Magicians are known for their secrets. It is probably one of the most intriguing elements of the art of deception. I would love to tell you about the Magician's Code, but it too is a closely guarded secret. The number one rule – and the only one that could be safely revealed – is that a true magician will never reveal the secret. I think this was summed up incredibly in the film The Prestige...
“Never show anyone. They’ll beg you and they’ll flatter you for the secret, but as soon as you give it up... you’ll be nothing to them.
The secret impresses no one, the trick you use it for is everything.”
LEARNING MAGIC & MENTALISM
People often ask how they can learn magic or mentalism. How, after all, do you learn the secrets of a craft that is shrouded in secrecy. There are many answers to the question, and here is my advice.
Books. It is often said (somewhat jokingly) that the best place to hide a secret is between the covers of a book. Much of the great magic and teaching available is inside the pages of the many wonderful magic books that have been published over the years. For recommendations on books, please don't hesitate to contact me, or search out some threads on The Magic Cafe (see number 3).
Mentor. Probably the best place to learn magic is from other magicians. One on one instruction, guidance, and advice are invaluable. Much of what I have learned over the years is the direct result of sessions with other magicians. Finding a mentor can be a challenge. I recommend checking for local clubs and organizations, asking local magicians, and reaching out to people online. I have several magicians I would consider mentors that I have only communicated with through chat or email. If you are in the Chico, California area, please don't hesitate to contact me directly and I can connect you with the local magic community.
Online. There is a lot of information available online, some good – some not so good. I would recommend joining The Magic Cafe, a forum website run by my friend Steve Brooks. You will find a depth of information on the forums and can connect with magicians from all over the world. There are also numerous Facebook groups, online video channels, and magic shops selling individual tricks, lectures, books, and more.
